Cream cheese strawberry sudachi Christmas cake by Montreux Patisserie

Getting into the Christmas mood with cake from Montreux Patisserie

We don’t often eat cake, but when we do, we tend to go a little bit overboard and consume an entire cake. Because life’s too short to have just one slice, right?

Our supplier of choice is Montreux Patisserie, a brand that you’re probably not familiar with, but there’s a good chance you’ve actually had their cakes before.

They’re mainly a wholesaler to hotels and cafes, and produce cake from their manufacturing plant (their words, not mine) at 44 Senoko Drive. In recent years, they’ve branched out into the retail trade via their online store on Shopee, and we’ve been regular customers.

Among the wide selection available from their regular year-round offering, The Wife’s favourite is their durian cake, whereas mine is their ondeh ondeh cake.

When Christmas season comes along, Montreux churns out limited-edition festive cakes with interesting flavours. Such as the Cream Cheese Strawberry Sudachi that we bought this year. The design is minimalist, but there’s no mistaking the Santa vibes.

When it was delivered, we immediately cut ourselves a slice to sample. From the cross-section, we could make out the layers of sudachi whipped cream, cream cheese, strawberry jelly, more cream cheese, baked cheese cake and crumble.

Given the generous amount of cream cheese, I was expecting it to taste quite heavy, but the tartness from the citrusy sudachi and the slightly sour strawberry provided a good counterbalance.

The cake arrived still partly frozen, so the bottom cheesecake layer was quite hard to cut through. We kept the remaining cake in the fridge and when we had it again for breakfast the next morning, our spoon went through all the layers easily.

Yes, cake is a perfectly acceptable breakfast item. As long as you don’t have it every day.

There were quite a few similarities with the Lemon Strawberry Pistachio Gateau that we bought last year. Strawberry jelly and citrus cream made a repeat appearance, and the overall taste was light and well-balanced, with bits of pistachio providing a pleasant crunch.

The swirly doughnut design with accents of mistletoe looked quite different from this year’s rendition of the Christmas spirit, but it displayed the same minimalist esthetic.

We were expecting Montreux to offer the same cake this year, and were eagerly waiting for their Christmas selection to appear on Shopee. Unfortunately, it didn’t make an appearance and so we got the Santa cake instead.

It looks like they don’t repeat their offerings, but tweak them to create different shapes and flavours, to keep things fresh and interesting I assume.

Between the two cakes, we preferred last year’s, mainly because we’re big fans of anything with pistachio. They were both good though, and it’s almost certain that we’ll be getting another Christmas cake from Montreux in 2022.

I wonder what they’ll come up with next. Maybe a re-interpreted Christmas tree? Or perhaps a stylised snowflake crystal?

Tune in next December to find out!
